<p>For TEM, bacteriophages were purified four times by passaging individual plaques using soft top agar and IPO2222, Ecc71 and SCC 3193 as hosts. Phage suspensions of <i>ca</i>. 10<sup>14</sup>–10<sup>18</sup> pfu ml<sup>-1</sup> in 5 mM MgSO<sub>4</sub> were used. Each photograph represents a typical bacteriophage particle. At least 10 photographs were taken of 10 different bacteriophage particles for each sample and preparation. Bar represents 100 nm.</p
