Use of blood, urine and milk samples in the diagnosis of subclinical ketosis and negative energy balance in grazing dairy cows

El objetivo de este trabajo fue comparar y asociar la presentación de cetosis subclínica y balance energético negativo (BEN), diagnosticados mediante las concentraciones de - hidroxibutirato ( HB) plasmático, con indicadores sanguíneos, urinarios y lácteos de energía en vacas lecheras. Setenta y cuatro vacas Holstein-Friesian fueron empleadas desde la tercera semana pre-parto hasta la octava posparto, obteniéndose muestras de plasma, orina y leche semanalmente; en plasma se determinó las concentraciones de HB, ácidos grasos no esterificados (NEFA) y glucosa; en orina se realizó la prueba de Rothera y se determinó la excreción de HB y el pH; en leche se determinó el contenido de grasa y proteína. Se consideró como puntos de corte para cetosis HB >1,0 >1,2 y >1,4 mmol/L y para la presentación de BEN cuando NEFA >300 µmol/L en preparto y HB >0,6 mmol/L en el posparto. La intensidad de la reacción de la prueba de Rothera y la concentración de HB urinario se relacionaron con las concentraciones de HB plasmático (r=0,57, P<0,05 y r= 0,42, P<0,05, respectivamente). La prueba de Rothera se asoció con los distintos puntos de corte de cetosis (P<0,05), así como con BEN (P<0,05). La concentración plasmática de HB presentó una asociación leve (P<0,05) con NEFA y glucosa y nula (P>0,05) con los indicadores lácteos y el pH urinario. Se concluye que las reacciones leve y moderada de la prueba de Rothera en orina son indicadores de BEN, mientras que las reacciones moderada e intensa son indicadoras de cetosis subclínica.111-119mirelanoro@gmail.comBimestralThe objective of this study was to compare and associate plasma concentrations of -hidroxi-butyrate ( HB) and subclinical ketosis with blood, urinary and milk indicators in dairy cow. Samples of blood, urine and milk were obtained weekly to determine the plasma concentrations of HB, non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) and glucose. Rothera test reaction, excretion of HB and pH were determined in urine samples. The concentrations of fat, protein and urea were determined on milk samples. The for subclinical ketosis were considered as: HB > 1.0, > 1.2 and >1.4 mmol/L. Negative energetic balance (NEB) presentation was considered when NEFA >300 µmol/L during pre-partum and when HB > 0.6 mmol/L during post-partum. The intensity in the reaction of Rothera test and the excretion of urinary HB were related with plasmatic concentrations of HB (r=0.57, P<0.05 and r= 0.42, P<0.5, respectively). The Rothera test associated with ketosis at the three desition limits (P<0.05), BEN (P<0.05). The relations between plasma HB with NEFA and glucose were lower (P<0.05), and not significant (P>0.05) with milk fat or protein content or urinary pH. In conclusion, slight and moderate reactions of the Rothera test are good indicators of NEB, while an intense test result indicates subclinical ketosis
