Trots att antalet blinda personer i världen fortsätter att öka görs det väldigt lite produktutveckling och forskning på tekniska hjälpmedel för blinda personer. Arbetet som är beskrivet i denna rapport går ut på att utveckla ett nytt typ av tekniskt hjälpmedel förde blinda. En intuitiv och kostnadseffektivt apparat som hjälper till att upptäcka objektoch hinder i höjd med den blindes huvud.Apparatens her givits det engelska namnet, Haptic Obstacle Detector eller kort HOD.Detektionen av hinder görs med hjälp av ultraljud och infraröds givare. När ett hinderupptacks på ett avstånd mindre än tre meter från bäraraen av HOD så blir den sammevarnad att ett hinder har upptäckts genom en vibrator som personen bär på kroppen.
