Haptic obstacle detector for the blind

Trots att antalet blinda personer i världen fortsätter att öka görs det väldigt lite produktutveckling och forskning på tekniska hjälpmedel för blinda personer. Arbetet som är beskrivet i denna rapport går ut på att utveckla ett nytt typ av tekniskt hjälpmedel förde blinda. En intuitiv och kostnadseffektivt apparat som hjälper till att upptäcka objektoch hinder i höjd med den blindes huvud.Apparatens her givits det engelska namnet, Haptic Obstacle Detector eller kort HOD.Detektionen av hinder görs med hjälp av ultraljud och infraröds givare. När ett hinderupptacks på ett avstånd mindre än tre meter från bäraraen av HOD så blir den sammevarnad att ett hinder har upptäckts genom en vibrator som personen bär på kroppen. Vibrationsamplitudenoch frekvensen varieras beroende på det uppmätta avståndet mellanden blinde och hindret. HOD fungerar bra i både mörker och dagsljus den har inbyggdafunktioner för att kunna individanpassa hur starka och ofta som vibrationerna ska verka.När en prototyp av HOD testades så kunde konstateras att den klarade av att detekterakomplexa objekt samt glatta ytor så som glasrutor. Mätnogrannheten varierar medavståndet till objektet, objektes geometri och komplexitet. Resultatet av testerna medprototyp HOD tyder på att konceptet kan vara an väl fungerande teknisk lösning för attkunna fungera som hjälpmedel åt blinda personer.Despite the blind population continue to grow and hence cause serious concerns in social development, technical solutions to aid their daily life tasks is still an issue. This thesis project aims to build an intuitive and low-cost device that help the blind avoid obstacles around the head height area. The device is called Haptic Obstacle Detector (HOD). HOD uses infrared sensor andultrasonic sensor to measure distance between the user and an object within 3m range. The measurement is then converted to vibrations in different amplitudes and frequencies, which closer distance corresponds to stronger and faster vibrations. HOD can work well inlow light condition. In addition, a rest mode function was implemented to avoid tiredness after long time use, and user can also switch quickly to another preferred vibration power. In experiments HOD proved to detect reliably complex surface objects and flat surface objects including glasses. Measurement accuracy varies with the distance to the object, object geometry and complexity. The results suggest that HOD is a feasible and promising concept to help the blind avoid obstacles
