Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis) - An alien species in Swedish lakes

Sammanfattning Rapporten beskriver hur ullhandskrabban (Eriocheir sinensis) påverkar nya miljöer som den blir introducerad till. Ullhandskrabban har mycket lätt för att anpassa sig till nya miljöer vilket kan vara ett problem då den följer med fartygs barlastvatten till nya vatten och hamnar. Jag jämförde rapporter från olika delar i Europa och USA där ullhandskrabban har hittats. Rapporterna användes sedan som underlag för att jämföra med vad som skulle kunna ske i Sverige. Det troligaste ställe som ullhandskrabban skulle kunna reproducera sig på är i Skagerrak vid kustremsan utanför Göteborg. Enligt mina beräkningar skulle detta vara nästan omöjligt då temperaturen och salthalten är för låga på våren den tid då ullhandskrabbans larver skall utvecklas och nå metamorfos till juvenil krabba. Ullhandskrabban kommer ändå att finnas här i de svenska vattnen. Den kommer fortsättnings vis att komma in via barlastvatten och tillsammans med att ullhandskrabban lever i tre till fem år leder detta till att många krabbor kan leva här samtidigt trots att ingen reproduktion kan ske. För att få bukt med problemet att främmande arter kommer till nya miljöer bör en ny teknik utvecklas för rening och kontroll av fartygs barlastvatten.Abstract This report describes the effect of the Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis) on the environment to which they are introduced. Chinese mitten crab is an expert to adept to new environments and thus a problem when the crab is introduced with the ships ballast water. I have been studying reports from different parts of Europe and USA where the Chinese mitten crab has been found. The reports were used as a basis for comparison between Sweden and other countries to see the effects when the crab is introduced. The likeliest place for the Chinese mitten crab to reproduce near Sweden is outside Gothenburg in Skagerrak. According to my calculations this is almost impossible, the temperature and the salinity are too low in the spring when the larvae are developing to juvenile crabs. The Chinese mitten crab is still going to exist in the Swedish water. The crab is introduced trough the ballast water and given that the crab’s lifespan is three to five years result in many crabs living at the same place even though no reproduction is possible. In order to manage the problem with introduction of alien species to new environments through the ballast water, new techniques for filtering and control of the ships ballast water should be developed
