The native range of the Chinese mitten crab (H. Milne-Edwards 1853) (Crustacea, Decapoda, Varunidae) reaches from the eastern pacific coast of China to the Korean Peninsula. The species was likely introduced with ballast water to Continental Europe in the early 20th century. Meanwhile, Eriocheir sinensis is common in German marine and limnetic water systems. The species often occurs in high population densities, especially in Schleswig-Holstein (Northern Germany), which is a serious problem for local fishermen. The thesis is aimed to understand and evaluate the structure and dynamics of the Chinese mitten crab populations in Schleswig-Holstein after its introduction about 100 years ago
