Anaplasma phagocytophilum is the causative agent of granulocytic anaplasmosis of both medical and veterinary importance. In Europe, A. phagocytophilum is transmitted by the Ixodid ticks, mostly Ixodes ricinus. It is mantained in nature by specific assciation to the several vertebrate hosts.
