Singing Anything!; Many Styles, One Technique

My research project will be focused on different methods and approaches to teaching singing for voices between the ages of eighteen and thirty. The question that I will continue to ask myself during this project is “Is there a connection in approach?” The act of singing is a unique art all in itself. Singing requires a well developed technique to produce a beautiful sound, all while promoting vocal health. I have been studying and rehearsing this technique for the past four years during my time at Murray State University. This project research will assist me in digging even deeper into the pedagogy of voice and its instruction. I will research the vocal techniques and complexities of three particular genres of music: Classical opera, musical theater, and vocal jazz. My method to this research is to personally interview the vocal faculty of the Murray State University Music Department. Each professor will be asked a variety of questions, specifically designed to match their area of vocal performance and instruction. I also plan to interview the Murray State jazz professor, Dr. Todd Hill, about his experiences singing in the jazz genre and directing jazz bands with included vocals. It has been said that the classical technique is a method and tool used even beyond the classical genre. My research aim will be primarily focused on proving this statement as true
