In regions where original documents may be difficult to obtain, bibliographic information sources, such as bibliographies and abstracting and indexing services, are of prime importance. Recognizing this, CTA has produced a directory entitled Agricultural bibliographic information sources. The directory was conceived initially as a course project at seminars on 'Agricultural information sources'. Seminar participants at two training seminars held in Malawi and Trinidad, were actively involved in devising procedures for collecting the information required. In order to obtain data on French information sources, the cooperation of participants in a previous CTA seminar on the same theme held in Senegal, was sought. The information in this directory is grouped into nine subject areas (agriculture; animal production; plant production; aquatic sciences and fisheries; forestry; natural resources, environment and energy; plant protection and post-harvest storage; food sciences; and economics, development and rural sociology), based on a modification of the classification scheme used in the AGRIS system. The information in each entry is arranged in such a way as to provide maximum detail in a logical sequence. general bibliographic information, including author, publisher, address, publication date and/ or frequency, and the ISSN or ISBN, is presented first. Most entries contain an outline of the scope of the information source, usually a direct quotation from the publisher's description of the subject matter. This is followed by a contents list, generally taken from the table of contents used in the service itself. Additional information is provided on such aspects as geographical coverage, type of materials covered ( abstract journals, for example), index included and classification systems use' The aims of this directory are to provide basis for the identification of available a accessible information and to promote exchange of scientific and technical knowledge. As such it will provide agriculture researchers and other workers in related fields with a means of increased access and exchange of information to help in the planing and management of agricultural development, research, extension and training.
