SPAAR in action

SPAAR (the Washington-based Special Program for African Agricultural Research) is collaborating with regional organizations m the development of regional frameworks for action in agricultural research for four regions of sub-Saharan Africa: - the Permanent kilter-State Committee for Drought Control in the Sahel (CILSS) - the Southern African Development Community (SADC) - the humid and sub-humid zones of Central and Western Africa - Eastern Africa, including member countries of the Intergovernmental Authority on Drought and Development (IGADD) plus Burundi and Rwanda. After many years of negotiation and planning frameworks for action for the Sahel and Southern Africa regions have been completed, and implementation is under way in Mali and Tanzania. National agricultural research masterplans for these two countries identify priority agricultural research programmes with which governments, donors, lARCs and the private sector are now cooperating. These efforts are being coordinated by the national governments. SPAAR has resumed publication (in English and French) of its newsletter Contact after a gap of three years.
