Twenty-five years of research now on CD-ROM

The full-text output of research publications (some 190,000 pages) produced mainly by institutes of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) from 1962-1986 is now available on CD-ROM. This new product is known as the Compact International Agricultural Research Library, Basic Retrospective Set (CIARL BRS). The set consists of 17 discs. The information on the discs includes material formerly published as books, serials and proceedings. The main languages of these documents are English Spanish and French. Monochrome images of graphics and photographs are included, together with maps and field guides in colour. A Master Disc enables full use to be made of one of the special attributes of CD-ROM: the ease with which searches for documents can be carried out. The broad research areas covered by the CIARL BRS discs include new technologies for increased productivity; protection of natural resources for agriculture; policy formulation and implementation; strengthening national agricultural research systems, conservation and use of genetic resources, and international collaboration in agriculture. CTA has agreed to purchase copies of these discs for distribution to its thirty-one CD-ROM project sites in ACP countries.
