New Opportunities for Producers of geranium essence

Essence of geranium, which is produced by distilling Pelargonium leaves, is used in the perfume industry. The essence is bought by the United States and Western European countries, chiefly France and the United Kingdom. During the seventies China became the main supplier, although the product was not of top quality. However, disease and climatic change slowed down production and increased prices. Now that foreign exchange has ceased to be a priority for China this country is not expected to increase its production. High prices might encourage buyers to turn to a synthetic essence, but the natural oil has certain characteristics which are particularly important in the manufacture of perfume. In the past, the main producers were Reunion, North Africa (chiefly Egypt), East Africa, Zaire and Cote d'lvoire. New opportunities have therefore opened up for producers who can guarantee a regular top quality supply.
