Diversification events are central issues in evolution since they generate phenotypic innovation such as colonization of novel ecological niches and, ultimately, speciation. To study the ecological and molecular drivers of adaptive diversification, we used the longest still-running evolution experiment. Twelve independent populations are propagated in a glucose limited minimal medium from a common ancestor of Escherichia coli by serial daily transfers since 1988 for more than 60,000 generations.
