Productive and economic evaluation of supplementation of Holstein-Brahman crossbred growing cows fed with sugar cane (Saccharum officinarum) in confinement conditions

Para evaluar crecimiento y beneficio económico de 26 hembras vacunas con 236,8 ± 9,74 kilogramos (kg) de peso vivo (PV) alimentadas con caña de azúcar (CA) se asignaron, tanto mautas (n=15; 166,8 ± 12,6 kg PV) como novillas (n=11; 306,7 ± 14,8 kg PV), a dos suplementos comerciales (S; 2 kg·animal-1?d-1) durante 70 días (d): S1 (porcentajes de proteína cruda y almidón de 15,5 y 37,0) y S2 (15,8 y 29,1 %). Los animales fueron estabulados individualmente. Semanalmente se determinó PV, consumo de CA (CCA) y se calculó ganancia diaria de peso (GDP). Las variables PV, GDP y CCA se analizaron con ANAVAR bajo un diseño completamente al azar con arreglo factorial 2 x 2 (dos suplementos y dos grupos etarios) con medidas repetidas. La evaluación económica se realizó por presupuesto parcial y margen bruto (MB). El PV mostró interacción Suplemento x Tiempo (P=0,02) con mayor PV en S1 a partir del d 7 (242,3 vs 236,8 kg), y a pesar de experimentar pérdida de peso los días 28 y 56, culminó con mayor PV que S2 (281,9 vs 271,1 kg) por su mayor GDP (0,56 vs 0,38 kg/d). El CCA en fresco y en materia seca fue igual entre tratamientos con promedios de 19,25 y 4,67 kg·animal-1·d-1, respectivamente. La evaluación económica evidenció que no es posible la sustitución de S1 por S2, aún cuando este último fue más asequible, situación debida al menor desempeño animal y consecuente tasa de retorno sobre los costos negativos (en promedio -100 %). The animals were housed individually. Weekly BW and SC intake (SCI) were determined and average daily gain (ADG) was calculated. Body weight, ADG and SCI were analyzed with ANOVA under a completely randomized design corresponding to a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement (two supplements and two age groups) with repeated measures. The economic evaluation was performed by partial budget and gross margin (GM). Body weight showed Supplement x Time interaction (P=0.02) with higher BW in S1 from d 7, and despite experiencing weight loss on 28 and 56 days, finished with BW greater than S2 (281.9 vs 271.1 kg) due to its higher ADG (0.56 vs 0.38 kg/d). Fresh matter and dry matter SCI were equals between treatments with averages of 19.25 and 4.67 kg·animal-1·d-1, respectively. The economic evaluation showed that it is not possible to replace S1 by S2, even if the latter was more affordable, a situation due to the lower animal performance and negative rate of return on costs (-100 % on average).
