DINAMIKA PERKAWINAN ENDOGAMI PADA KETURUNAN ARAB DI YOGYAKARTA

The Arab descendants in Indonesia are some of the diaspora‟s population. They are believed to have originated from Hadramaut, a province in the southern part of Yemen. As a diaspora ethnic, Arab of Hadrami descendants are also primodial peoples. This can be seen from its orientation to the land of origin (fatherland), that it is very important in maintaining the source of values and group identity. One of the subcultures brought in is the patrilineal kinship system, in which it draws a lineage to the male side. This affects the marital institutions they practice. Endogamy marriage becomes the preferred form of marriage in an effort to maintain the patrilineal kinship system adopted. However, empirical facts in the field suggest that there has been a tug-of-war relationship on endogamy marriage toward exogamy. As a diaspora ethnic, Arab descendants in Yogyakarta indirectly intersect with local cultural values. The intersection with the culture seems to be an influence on the dynamics in endogamy marriage toward the exogamy. Research in this thesis is field research (field research), that is research conducted or conducted in a region by using sociological approach. The sociological approach is an approach that uses logic or theories to describe the phenomena that occur in society, and see the effects of these phenomena on others. The theory used in this thesis is the theory of diaspora and is complemented by the theory of adaptation by Robert K. Merton. As for the results of this research, it can be concluded that in the dynamics of marriage of Arabic descent in Yogyakarta there are two patterns of adaptation that is formed. First conformity adaptation. This form of adaptation is commonly practiced in society to adapt to others. In this case the practice of endogamy marriage becomes a form of conformity adaptation pattern. Second, rebellion adaptation. This form of adaptation means withdrawal by rebellion. This means that the pattern of adaptation is done by rejecting the cultural goals and creating a new social structure. In this context the Arab descendants who engage in exogamy marriage are regarded as a form of creating a new social structure accompanied by resignation in the group. Pattern adaptation of conformity and rebellion by the Arab descendants in Yogyakarta provides an empirical fact that there is a dynamic in the practice of marriage. Exogamy becomes empirical evidence that there is an individual preference in the interaction patterns with society that can‟t be avoid
