linewaysIn Freshwater, for example, where many of the lots were surveyed and granted by the government, open/paths or "lineways" acted as boundaries through the wooded sections of t the property in every case. The p aths through the woods were no more than three feet wide and sometimes portions of walls were erected along the trail. Poles or longers were also nailed to trees at intervals along the boundary, and at the corners, where they indicated the directions of the "lineways". "Keep your 'lineways' open and your corners marked" was the accepted rule in Freshwater and it is likely that this stipulation obtained since the beginning of the settlement.W. J.
