The "fisherman" is he who comes down in the early spring from Harbour Grace, or Trinity, or Carbonear, daringly pushing his wooden craft through the ice floes of late May or early June, seeking out, at the risk of his life, the first choice of the fishing grounds. In boats of all sizes and conditions of staunchness - but all equally helpless in the grip of the ice - borne down with supplies and equipment, he and his fellows toil slowly northward and set their nets for the early "run" of cod.[Just for background.
