handIn Calvert fishermen take their traps out of the water in mid-August. The weather may be very stormy after this and by now the fish tend to move offshore. Men go hand-lining in a motor boat in the fall. The hand line consists of a baited hook and a sinker at its end. The fisherman holds the line across his fingers so that he can feel the pluck when the fish takes the bait. The fish, when hooked, is hauled up hand over hand and placed in one of the "pounds" on board. A pound is a compartment where the codfish is placed. A skiff - the trap (cod) boat of the Newfoundland fishing industry is "decked off" for the fall fishery.
