brewis nThis is a dish which occupies almost the same place at a Newfoundlander's breakfast-table that baked beans are supposed to do on that of a Bostonian. It consists of pieces of hard bis- cuit soaked over night, warmed in the morning, and then eaten with boiled codfish and butter. This is plainly the old English word usually written _brewis_, variously explained...Wright gives it in various forms, _brewet_, _brewis_, etc., as denoting pottage, but says that in the north of England they still have "a _brewis_ made of slices of bread with fat broth poured over them."See cited quotation.PRINTED ITEM DNE-citG.M.Story June 1959Used I and SupUsed I1Used ISource appears in DNE I as "1895 J A Folklore viii, 28
