A district heating and cooling (DHC) system has been installed in Wakayama Marina City, a resort and residential town currently under construction on an artificial island in Wakaura Bay. The system uses steam recovered from one of the turbines in a large thermal power station, and is the first scheme of its kind in Japan. The apparanet increase in heat input to the turbine after steam recovery is only about 70% of the heat actually supplied to Wakayama Marina City via the DHC network. This effectively results in an energy saving of 30%. In addition, efficient boilers and good environmental protection facilities in the power station all combine to help realise an environmentally friendly and highly efficient DHC system
