District heating and cooling using ground water as a heat source

With a view to saving energy and protecting the environment, Tokyo Electric Power Company is actively promoting the development of district heating services which use alternative energy sources. In Takasaki, the company has installed a district heating system using ground water as its heat source. The system is the first of its kind in Japan. In comparison with air source systems, energy consumption was reduced by 20%, equivalent to annual fuel oil savings of 250,000 litres. Emissions of NOx, SOx and CO2 were also significantly reduced.
