McCarthy, R.N., in the development ofthese nutritional indicators is acknowledged. The implementation of the Diagnosis Related Groups (DRGs) in 1983 shifted the financial incen-tive for Nutritional Support Teams (NSTs) from rev-enue generation to cost containment. This new health care austerity has forced some NSTs to aban-don their services and has led to more complicated procedures for establishing new NSTs.1 While it is inherently apparent that nutrition is a vital compo-nent of health, irrefutable evidence that NSTs are cost effective and cost beneficial has not been dem-onstrated on a significantly large scale to present to administrators responsible for funding NSTs
