With workloads increasing an average of 15% per year it has become more difficult for the staff of hospital laboratories to process their daily work accurately and efficiently. The availability of staff has not kept pace with the demands on the laboratories. The pressures on the laboratories associated with teaching hospitals of medical schools have generally been greater than those in the laboratories of other hospitals. This is partly occasionedby the teaching and researchrolesof the medical schools, which generate a greater demand for laboratory data. Moreover, teaching hospitals are often situated in relatively poor urban areas and have had to assume much of the responsibility for providing medical care for the community
