Clinical Significance of Supernumerary Nipples

The frequency of accessory nipples in black Americans is almost eight times greater than in white European patients. Association of a wide range of abnor-malities with supernumerary nipples in whites has, thus far, not been our expe-rience in black Americans. SUPERNUMERARY OR ACCESSORY NIPPLES are relatively common in the black neonate. In the past, in whites, vertebral anom-alies ’ and cardiac arrythmia ’ have been reported to be associated with this condition. In 1979, K. Iiflehes,3 from Hungary, reported the association of significant renal abnormalities with super-numerary nipples. The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence of supernumerary nipples and their association, if any, with other congenital anomalies in black neonates. To our knowledge this has never been studied in the black neonate. Materials and Method
