International audienceThis article deals with the issue of the antiphilosophique education of readers in the Europe of the Enlightenment by analysing the Traité de la lecture chrétienne, a text published in 1774 in Paris by the Benedictine Nicolas Jamin (1711–1782) and translated into German, Italian and Spanish in the 1780s. After a brief introduction explaining the consequences and importance of antiphilosophique reading as a reaction to the spread of Enlightenment ideas, the article focuses on the content of Jamin’s work, which set out detailed rules determining which books should be read and which should be banned, and outlined appropriate ways of reading.
