With basic hematology skills and a reliable staining method, neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, and eosinophils should be readily recognizable during microscopic exam-ination for a manual differential count. Microscopic examination allows for the evalu-ation of morphologic changes and the presence of other cells not typically detected by instruments, such as band neutrophils, immature lymphocytes, and others.
