of bolus fluorouracil (5-FU) by addi-tion of leucovorin to the treatment regimen has increased response in patients with disseminated colorectal cancer from fewer than 20 % to more than 40%. In view of the short half-life of 5-FU and its cell cycle specific-ity, it may be that infusion rather than intravenous bolus injection would increase efficacy. Further-more, the advent of safer indwelling intravenous catheters and pump technology, allowing home and am-bulatory treatment, has made pro-tracted infusion clinically feasible
