RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN THE PAVEMENT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM IN FRANCE

The French pavement management system has been completly redesigned since 1988. The new version, GiRR, presently involves three modules: the evaluation module gives an overview of the condition of both structure and surface of the pavement; the strategy analysis module simulates the application of a maintenance policy for several years; the programming module assists the manager in preparing a maintenance programme consistent with his budgetary and economic constraints. These modules are completed by an expert system that quantifies the most important maintenance solutions. The three modules pick up the information in a database, VISAGE. Over the last five years, this database has been improved so that it easily ensures full compatibility between central and local users. 1
