The attainment of literacy has been positioned as a key to achieving the Scottish Executive’s social inclusion and widening participation agendas. This paper explores the argument that the social practices discourse around literacy has been written into policy documents but has yet to be drawn upon within practice in the Scottish Further Education context. To achieve this, it will provide a brief overview of Scottish Further Education and the most recent policies which were intended to impact on its literacy provision.
