Nephelometry of serum before and after ultrafiltrationthrough cellulose membranes affords a simple and rapid physical method for separately estimating pre..lipoproteins and chylomicrons in their native state. The method was rigorouslyevaluated through correlativestudies with chemical analyses, electron microscopy, and electrophoresis. Together, the data indicate that this technique, combined with the determination of choles-terol as an estimate of-lipoprotein concentration, allows the pheno-typing of hyperlipemias.
