Following years of steady increases, South Florida began to experience a decrease in enrollment in the 2005-06 school year. According to Florida Atlantic University’s Center for Urban and Environmental Solutions, for most South Florida counties, including Broward, the number of enrolled students did not meet reduced enrollment projections. Florida Department of Education data also show this enrollment trend in Florida’s private schools, where the number of students enrolled began to decline in 2003-04, a year prior to the first decline in Broward County Public Schools (BCPS), and the number of private schools began to decline the following year.
