It is with great pleasure that I present you with the final advice of the central Ontario Smart Growth panel on a long-term growth strategy for this part of the province. The panel has successfully completed its deliberations and our final report contains a comprehensive set of recommendations for managing and promoting growth in central Ontario into the year 2035. The panel has learned a lot over the last year, and has wrestled with a very complex question: How can we best prepare central Ontario for a healthy and prosperous future? Our advice outlines a vision, core values, guiding principles, strategic directions that are key to achieving the vision, as well as an implementation framework for getting started right away. Our recommended strategic directions stress the importance of: • Balanced growth; • Transit as the first priority of an integrated transportation network; • Protection for the environment; and • A need for a more collaborative approach to waste management.
