This study was a review of organizational learning definitions and methodological approaches used or proposed in the articles submitted to the 1998 Academy of Management mid-year Organizational Learning: Moving from Theory to Research conference. The conference participants presented ontological differences regarding the nature of organizational learning and epistemological differences associated with understanding the phenomenon. The complexity inherent in these different perspectives called for a dynamic sociological model to offer a systemic view of the phenomenon of organizational learning.
