Black and white photograph of Rice Owls basketball player Gene Schwinger, accompanied by text headlining his achievement and entry into the Rice Athletic Hall of Fame.Gene Schwinger (class of 1954) set four impressive basketball school records as a senior: most points scored in one season and most rebounds in one season, and most career points and most career rebounds. All four records stood for many, many years. A unanimous SWC all-conference and team MVP selection for two years, Gene also grabbed a share of all-America honors in his senior year while he was co-captain and helped lead the Owls to a conference co-championship. Schwinger played at six-foot-six but amazingly grew another inch after ending his basketball career. A superior student, Gene added an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School to his Rice B.A. degree.
