Rice University Owls track vaulter Warren Brattlof

Black and white photograph of Rice University Owls track and field athlete Warren Brattlof, class of 1965, accompanied by text headlining his achievement and entry into the Rice Athletic Hall of Fame.Caption reads: The Brattlof saga began in the early 1960’s when Warren became the first Texas high school athlete to vault over 14 feet, and he was second in the USA of all high school vaulters for Galena Parks HS. He was recruited for the Rice track program by the famed late Owl coach, Emmett Brunson, in 1961, and had a spectacular career with the Owls. He won the SWC freshman title in1962, then varsity championships in 1963, 1964, 1965. The Owl team won the SWC title in ’64, and in ‘’65 he had his career best 16-1½ (a terrific mark at the time) to win the U.S. Track & Field Federation national title. He also won titles at the famed Texas Relays and the Kansas Relays in the mid-sixties … Warren recalls special memories of his Rice years of such things as throwing Coach Brunson and aide Augie Erfurth (now Athletic Director) in the shower with their clothes on to celebrate the 1964 SWC team title at Lubbock. And he remembers being impressed by the tremendous commitment by the middle distance runners in workouts. Warren left Rice with a degree in business management, but then went to the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth for a Religious Education degree, and he now is Associate Pastor of the Memorial Baptist Church of Pasadena.
