It is often claimed that supervisors do not di¤erentiate enough between high performing and low performing employees when evalu-ating performance. This in turn should reduce the incentive e¤ects of bonus plans. Hence, we study the impact of di¤erentiation in bonus payments on subsequent performance empirically with a large panel data set. We \u85nd that on average stronger di¤erentiation indeed has a substantial positive e¤ect on future performance. This e¤ect is the larger the higher the hierarchical level. But di¤erentiation may be-come harmful at the lowest hierarchical levels
