Abstract: in this paper we experimentally address the issue of the constraints governing the use of connectives in oral and written discourse production and comprehension. Results indicate that connectives not only constrain the inference of coherence relations between two discourse segments, but they are in turn constrained by the type of coherence relation involved and by the oral vs. spoken modality. 1
