Resin acids, kraft pulping, 14C-labelled fatty acids, black liquor, Saltsman-Kuiken method, tall oil. The fate of resin acids in kraft pulping was examined us ing 14C-labelled fatty acids as a preliminary to the study of both individual model resin acids and mixed resin acid systems. Careful attention to pulp washing resulted in nearly complete recovery of resin acids. The only chemical changes were the result of the usual double-bond isomerizations of the abietadienoic acids and a small increase in dehydro abieticacid
