The present investigation, continuing that of Swartz dealing with the same unbleached pulp, is the first fairly comprehensive study of the mechanism of bleaching of kraft pulp, as well as perhaps the most extensive data yet reported regarding bleaching under controlled pH conditions, and using any kind of pulp. 'l1he broad se ope of this research in which the same pulp, the same type of bleaching treatment, and the same analytical methods were always used, permitted an evaluation of the relative importance of several variables calling for consideration in any discussion of the mechanism of bleaching.
