The reconstruction of lateral consonants in Sino-Tibetan languages is often complex. The laterals of Archaic Chinese, for instance, change into all sorts of consonants in Middle Chinese: d-定, th- 透, y- 以, sy- 书, x- 晓, and even l- 来, not to mention the consonant cluster
