Designing instruction set architectures is an inter-disciplinary process since they involves both hardware and software components. In most design projects, such a relationship is explored in a manual fashion. In this paper we propose a systematic method to derive the best combination of instruction sets and micro-architectures from a given set of application benchmarks. This method also shows how the benchmarks can be compiled with the instruction set generated. The prelimi-nary experiment demonstrated that the prototype of our method is able to generate instruction sets resemble to most of the modern instruction sets for some typical RISC processors. 1
