The Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Shane Ross TD, has welcomed the decision of the Government earlier today to approve the General Scheme of a Road Traffic (Fixed Penalty – Drink Driving) Bill 2017. Speaking today the Minister said: “The evidence shows that despite a perception to the contrary, drink driving continues to be a very serious issue in this country. We can no longer be ambivalent in our attitude toward this destructive practice.” Research conducted by the Road Safety Authority cites alcohol as a contributory factor in 38% of fatal collisions in the four year period examined.
