The pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela has become a metaphor for going forth and life as journey and is no longer only travelled by Catholics but attracts a much larger international and intergenerational public. The surroundings are conductive to both the religious experience within the Catholic Christian tradition and to a self-identity quest, personalizing the pilgrimage’s tradition and distancing it from the Church’s point of view.
