Abstract

This article investigates the way in which instant patina is employed in the Casa della Memoria (House of Memory) in Milan by Baukuh (2015), with reference to Maurice Halbwachs’s theory of collective memory. It observes that the Casa della Memoria uses instant patina with the aim of solidifying a collective memory of democracy, and that it can potentially become a ‘site of memory' as defined by Pierre Nora. Whether these two developments are without risk is the subject of critical reflection
