Strategies for the next generation port and regional co-development

Ports possess a great potential to serve as sources of social, spatial, economic, and environmental development of their host regions. As such, ports should embrace a vision that nurtures both its business and its region. To attain this objective, it is vital for ports to implement effective strategies. The advent of technology has rendered Next Generation Ports (NGP) to shift its strategic focus from mere resource control to refined resource management, from optimization of internal processes to external interactivity, and from maximizing customer value to maximizing the value of the overall ecosystem. To facilitate the transformation, ports should effectively strategize on harnessing Disruptive Technologies (DT), that is seamlessly integrated with the internet, empowered by Advanced Automation, Internet of Things (IoT), and Big Data Analytics. This paper explores the interlink between DT adoption in the Port of Singapore and its contribution to regional development. Regional development is discussed based on four dimensions; the economic, social, spatial and environmental dimensions. The study adopts a qualitative methodology, conducting research through means of a web-based survey as well as face-to-face interviews with industry professionals. Using descriptive and content analyses, this paper suggests that the Singapore Port take on several strategies when involved in regional development, to transform itself into a port characterized by four Es: Excellent in operation, Extensive in the ecosystem, Explorative in innovation, and Enhancing sustainable communities.Bachelor of Science (Maritime Studies
