A detailed analysis of the scholiastic and Eustathian material concerning the variants \u3b4\u3cc\u3c3\u3ba\u3b5\u3bd / \u3b4\u3cc\u3c3\u3ba\u3bf\u3bd / \u3b4\u1ff6\u3ba\u3b5\u3bd in Il. 14.382 is performed. Examination of the manuscripts and an investigation into the history of the modern studies suggests it is more plausible to conclude that the reading attributed to Aristarchus in the scholia was \u3b4\u3cc\u3c3\u3ba\u3bf\u3bd and not \u3b4\u3cc\u3c3\u3ba\u3b5\u3bd. This assessment is congruent with the evidence from Eustathius.
