Analysis of the port industry under a game theory approach

RESUMEN: Los puertos conforman una parte muy importante dentro de la economía del país puesto que son el medio más utilizado para el desarrollo del comercio. A su vez, se han producidos grandes avances que, junto con la globalización y con las revoluciones industriales, han permitido mejorar la eficiencia de los puertos para mejorar la economía mundial. A lo largo de la historia, el manejo de los puertos se ha regido bajo el mandato de los gobiernos, pero debido a sucesivas causas, éstos han permitido la entrada de entidades privadas para conseguir una mayor eficiencia y eficacia. Debido a esto, se produce un importante fenómeno gubernamental, la devolución portuaria. Debido a esto, las entidades privadas intervienen en los puertos de tal forma que estimula la competencia portuaria. World Bank (2007) establece cuatro tipos de gobernanza portuaria, a saber, landlord, toolport, puerto privado y puerto público. Cabe mencionar que el sistema más utilizado en el mundo es el primero y demostraremos el porqué. Esta devolución portuaria favorece la competencia y a su vez la eficiencia y por ello, la Comisión Europea ha permitido dicho fenómeno para mejorar la calidad de servicio y ayudar a los puertos menos eficientes. A lo largo de la investigación, mediante un enfoque de teoría de juegos, analizaremos la competencia de dos puertos con diferentes sistemas de gobernanza portuaria (toolport vs landlord) y calcularemos las funciones de beneficios y precios para obtener un equilibrio de Nash, es decir, la mejor estrategia para cada puerto.ABSTRACT: Ports are a very important part of the country's economy since they are the most used means for the development of trade. At the same time, there have been great advances that, together with globalization and industrial revolutions, have made it possible to improve the efficiency of ports to improve the world economy. Throughout history, port management has been governed under the mandate of governments, but due to successive causes, these have allowed the entry of private entities to achieve greater efficiency and effectiveness. Due to this, an important governmental phenomenon, port devolution, occurs. Due to this, private entities intervene in ports in a way that stimulates port competition. World Bank (2007) establishes four types of port governance, namely landlord, toolport, private port and public port. It is worth mentioning that the most widely used system in the world is the first one and we will show why. This port devolution favors competition and in turn efficiency and therefore, the European Commission has allowed such a phenomenon to improve the quality of service and help less efficient ports. Throughout the research, using a game theory approach, we will analyze the competition of two ports with different port governance systems (toolport vs. landlord) and calculate the profit and price functions to obtain a Nash equilibrium, i.e. the best strategy for each port.Grado en Economí
