Georgia Tech Field Day Races, 1905

The site is the Georgia Tech campus, with Knowles Dormitory, the "Shacks" dormitories and the A. French Textile Engineering Building visible right to left and in the background. The lanes of the track are marked by string. Seven men are standing to the left and behind the runners; one has just fired the starting gun from which smoke can be seen rising. At the far a right a student is seated, attired in bathrobe, probably waiting his turn to race.||The Department of Physical Culture began at Georgia Tech in 1896. The school's Annual Announcement for that year states that school officials appreciated "the close relationship between a strong, healthy body, and an active, vigorous brain" and had compulsory during the apprentice year only, but all students were encouraged to participate in baseball football, track, and gymnastics.
