The 21st Century existence of shortages, gaps, and low underrepresented groups in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines in the economic sector and higher education presents a problem for the United States and the world economy. Selected studies seemingly suggest that a need for a diverse faculty through recruitment and retention are needed in both K-12 and postsecondary education.
