This essay argues for the consideration of spatial approaches to social work. Spatial sensitivity and reflection allows a multi-level understanding of social spaces beyond individualistic, clinical and single-case oriented concepts of social work. Also, this perspective enables interesting collaborations between social work practitioners and researchers and supports a research based practice. In the German tradition of social work, the idea of social spaces (Sozialräume) became a significant conceptual reference since the early 1990s.
