The paper provides a general overview of the Black Sea region throughout the period of Ottoman hegemony, starting from the sixteenth century and until the Russian-Ottoman War of 1768-1774. It argues that contrary to the oft-repeated manta, the Ottoman dominance did not transform the Black Sea into a ‘dead sea’:. While the role of the Porte as the center of power could not be discarded, the degree of integration that the region achieved did not mean the decline of political, economic and cultural activity, but instead created new connections spanning the body of water, making possible new alliances between previously disparate polities and communities
